Moore Symposium Fall 2011

What have I learned?

  • 3 things that  ADD kids need: accommodations, advocacy, & allies.
  • The gift of time is invaluable to all children, especially those with special needs.
  • Try the word "and" not "but". "But" negates the first statement.
  • Empower kids to advocate for themselves.
  • Encourage kids to step out as successful students.
  • Keep directions clear and simple.
  • Look for and acknowledge all positive abilities and behaviors.
  • Allow for and adapt to different learning styles.
  • What works for kids with special needs, works for all kids. Level the playing field.
  • Rephrase questions (open ended, offer options for answers, offer "yes" or "no" responses or a chance to physically point to or make a response.
  • Keep accommodations and expectations high.
  • It's a learning rights movement. Let's be the best advocates and strongest voice in this revolution.
  • It's about offering students a choice and a voice.

What have I discovered?

  • There are a lot of barriers in the traditional school setting. It's hard to get supports. How can we get through these barriers?
  • Different times of behaviors and actions can actually help facilitate creativity in the art room.
  • Behavior is communication.
  • I have a lot more to discover about being a human being.
  • I still long for constant growth, and want to learn from my students and my peers.
  • Keep depositing into each child's self esteem bank.
  • Pay attention and be mindful of those who have special needs in your class.

What have I confirmed?

  • Often we look at what our students lack. Let's look for what our kids are successful at first, highlight that and build a kid up from there.
  • Some strategies can be used across the board for all kids in need.
  • There really is no normal. Everyone has their story.
  • There's no placement for judgement, only for empowering kids to be successful.
  • Teachers continue to support, encourage and stretch their students. Your commitment is amazing!
