Bookmaking with Elizabeth

For this bookmaking project, I focused on sewing and pattern making. I created
specific “games” to target these skills. When it came time for the binding process, I
asked to work in a one-on-one situation with the students. I also wrote step-by-step
instructions that could be read aloud and used as a checklist.
Sewing Game Using 14x20 sections of cardboard, I painted bold silhouettes
(butterfly, flower, car, etc.), punched holes around the edges (with a screwdriver!),
and attached a needle (q-tip without cotton ends) with thread (1/4” ribbon secured
with masking tape). The idea is to sew around the edges like a connect-the-dots
puzzle.
Pattern Boards I took an 18x26 sheet of recycled matte board and drew a repeating
pattern based on a simple shape (triangle, diamond). Taking this basic shape, I cut
out a dozen more of the same shape from pieces of foam. The students were able to
manipulate the foam pieces around the board to create new patterns.
