Tracy's Calder Creations

"My lesson was on Alexander Calder's mobiles. I wanted to show the students various ways that a two dimensional medium, in this case paper, could be used to form three dimensional works of art. We used dice to create story ideas which were then reinterpreted by the students in the shapes that they created for their mobiles. Wire brackets were pre-made to make the project fit the one hour class period, and paper clips were used to attach the paper shapes as well as to provide added weight where they needed it. If the students finished early, there were templates available to create cubes (like the dice) or pyramids which took the 2D into 3D idea one step further. I think the students really enjoyed the lesson. The mobiles were colorful and exciting to see hanging in the room."
