This week, Tina chose to compare historical and modern use of silhouettes and then ask our students to create their own scenes using their bodies to make silhouettes.
M. Auguste Edouart was one of the best-known silhouette cutters from the time when the practice was most popular, in the early 1800s. Edouart cut more than 100,000 silhouettes of famous people, but lost most of them in a shipwreck in 1859.
One place today where we see use of silhouettes is in ipod advertising. The kids had great fun comparing the two and then got to work, in pairs of 2, to make their own action shots.
This was a very large scale project, and Tina had to really think about her classroom layout and clean up process. As you can see, each child had a designated space on the floor, creating boundaries for where and how everyone should work.
