Mel's Egyptian Tiles

In this weeks lesson, Melanie's students learned that some Egyptian art incorporates portraits of people and the portraits show/depict what the person was known for or famous for. Melanie focused on teaching the kids about Ancient Egyptians during the time period of 500 BC – 300 AD. After viewing and discussing several images, Melanie had the students create their own modern tile and represent it in the Egyptian style of artwork.

Mel's created their tiles by learning how to use stamps and paint on wet clay slabs. Mel also chose to offer pressing popsicle sticks into the clay for those who struggled with creating the human figure on their own.

This was a VERY ambitious project to get done in 45 minutes, but Mel kept the kids moving and used several different methods (including check lists, labels on materials and pre-prepped para-educator directions) to keep the class moving smoothly.
