2 weeks ago Beth taught her first lesson to our younger students. Beth's objective was for her young students to walk away from this project with an idea of what quilts are, why they are made, how they are used, what patterns we see in them, and how layers and borders are used in them.
Keeping with our "Going Green" theme, Beth chose to use recycled materials in her project having each child create a collage on a rectangular sheet of black paper. Beth was really great at instructing each step of the collage-quilt making process. I love how she talked about how in quilting many layers are stitched together to form a thicker blanket. Beth even brought her own quilt from home so that the kids could see and touch it. Beth asked her students to do a similar thing with their collages, and some even made pop out parts! After the students were done, they were asked to stitch a border along the side of their collage. Beth made a great adaptation for some of our children who struggle with fine motor skills, and added tape to the end of each piece of yarn so that it was stiff enough to easily get through each hole.
After each child was done, Beth gathered her students to the front of the room and heals a small critique. The kids clapped and cheered for each other, and it was all very exciting. For the final show Beth asked her students if she could connect all of the collages together to create one large "quilt". I am eager to see the fabulous final product.
