Camouflage Flip Flops with Gail

In continuing with our "Going Green" theme, Gail chose to do some camouflage work with recycled shoes.
Originally Gail wanted to gather shoes from a local thrift store, but after finding that clean ones were a bit beyond her budget, Gail hunted down some leftover flip flops last summer that were on sale for $1 and decided to use those instead.
Gail's break down of this lesson was really great. She asked the kids to pick one simple shape and trace it over and over again on 2-3 different pieces of colored paper. The kids were then asked to cut those shapes out and layer them on another piece of colored paper. This created the camouflage affect. The 2nd step to this project was to then use the original cut out shape as a stencil to draw the shape with a pencil over and over on each flip flop (the flip flops were gessoed by Gail ahead of time). Gail instructed the students to even use the stencil on the straps of the flip flop. When they were done drawing the students were then asked to pick paint that matched their original camouflage collage and paint the flip flops the same way.
The final affect was really cool!
