While in India, one of my most favorite, low cost art projects was creating this sculpture out of recycled newspapers and tape. Children between the ages of 5 and 15 worked on this together. This project not only worked on some of my students fine motor skills, it also worked on hand-eye coordination, social skills, and balance. It took the students a little while to figure out that a square base is not the best shape to use. I loved watching the excitement grow as my students realized that triangles were the way to go. The sculpture itself reached almost 5 feet tall, towering over many of the students, and becoming big enough for some of our littlest kids to crawl around in.
Adaptations:
-Students may use a pencil to help guide the paper rolling.
-If students are unable to role the paper, they may try folding it.
-Students with minimal use of their hands may hand off tape, and give directions either verbally or with head and/or eye signals.
-Working in pairs or with a group gives everyone a chance to be involved in the decision making process of creating this structure.
